Your seven confidence checks

01
CHOOSE
Start with the Decision
Know who needs to decide what, and why. Build for a business question, not a collection of charts.
Tell Claude “Who the audience is, what decision(s) they need to make.”
-
02
COLLECT
Know Your Data
Understand sources, definitions, time periods, row-level detail, coverage, and what might be missing.
Tell Claude “Summarize these sources: row counts, date ranges, fields, data grain, possible gaps, and possible duplicates.”
-
03
CHECK
Verify Before You Trust
Reconcile totals. Check duplicates, missing data, unexpected joins, outliers, and inconsistent dates.
Tell Claude “Show the source totals and all data quality issues you can check for. Prove joins do not incorrectly multiply rows or costs, etc.”
-
04
CLEAN & CALCULATE
Define What the Numbers Mean
Specify formulas, denominators, filters, exclusions, and assumptions. Don't let AI silently define your metrics.
Tell Claude “Explain metric definitions and assumptions you calculated. If there are common alternatives, tell me how they would change the values.”
-
05
CHART
Make Important Patterns Visible
Use comparisons, trends, distributions, and exceptions. Make denominators, units, and time periods clear.
Tell Claude “Which simple visuals would best reveal the patterns, trends and anomalies that might alter the decision, tradeoffs, and uncertainty? Show them and the best 2 alternatives for each data display we create. Ask me to pick one.”
-
06
CUSTOMIZE
Design for Action
Fit the dashboard to strategic, tactical, or operational users. Add useful targets, thresholds, and drilldowns.
Tell Claude “Improve clarity. Make it immediately clear what needs attention and what action follows. Best 2-3 filters or clickable filters in the dashboard that will maximize utility.”
-
07
COMMUNICATE
Communicate the Decision
Explain what matters, the evidence, what's still uncertain, what to do next, and what to watch.
Tell Claude “Write a 30-second decision brief: finding in 2-3 latest time periods or top categories, level of evidence, uncertainty and possible actions. Potential supplemental analysis I could build next to verify/validate/confirm.”
