ABOUT STEPHEN MCDANIEL

I help capable people become the ones leadership trusts with the numbers.

I have spent more than three decades as an analyst, product leader, data science executive, teacher, and hands-on builder. The tools changed a lot. The responsibility did not: understand the question, test the evidence, and make a call you can defend.

The Accidental Analyst is for business professionals who became responsible for the answer, often without ever planning to become “the analyst.” I want to help you work faster, make better calls, and second-guess less without handing your judgment over to AI.

WHERE I LEARNED THE METHOD

I learned this by doing the work.

Across finance, marketing, product, healthcare, media, and operations, the numbers had to hold up with executives, customers, boards, and the people responsible for acting on them.

~$7M

Netflix customer economics and vendor assurance

Built foundational customer lifetime-value and cohort-valuation systems, then used analytical vendor-performance audits that identified discrepancies leading to approximately $7 million in recoveries.

$2.7B market

National forecasting at Kinetiq

Architected the predictive and Snowflake platform supporting Canada’s approximately $2.7 billion linear television advertising market, including 60-day, half-hourly forecasting across roughly 320 stations.

~$100M

Analytics product leadership at SAS

Led a multidisciplinary R&D organization of approximately 40 people supporting enterprise business-intelligence products generating approximately $100 million annually.

Tableau ETS

Forecasting built into Tableau

Conceived and architected Tableau’s native ETS forecasting capability with automated model selection and prediction intervals for business users.

$1B+

Pharmaceutical acquisition analysis

Built revenue-verification and Monte Carlo acquisition-simulation systems supporting board evaluation of a pharmaceutical transaction exceeding $1 billion, including sensitivities and P50/P90 risk ranges.

Microsoft

Customer analytics and KPI governance

Directed customer-to-revenue analytics strategy, executive KPI governance, and predictive churn and expansion work connecting product signals to finance, revenue, sales, and retention planning.

WHAT MAKES ONSITE DIFFERENT

Your questions, your tools, your context

Bring your actual workbooks, models, dashboards, or structurally equivalent examples. We use them to strengthen how your team frames questions, checks evidence, challenges AI-assisted analysis, and communicates decisions.

EXECUTIVE READY

Works with analysts and leaders in the same room

I have presented analytical results, architecture, commercial implications, and recommendations directly to CEOs, CFOs, CTOs, boards, operating leaders, agencies, advertisers, healthcare leaders, and government stakeholders.

PRIVATE ONSITE TRAINING

Bring the method to the work already on your team’s desk.

Private online dashboard workshops start at $5,000 for five participants, with four live hours across two sessions. Expanded or onsite engagements are quoted separately.

WHY THIS MATTERS

“A technically correct analysis can still produce the wrong decision.”

Calculation is often the easy part. The harder work is defining the question, reconstructing the evidence, challenging alternative explanations, testing whether the recommended action survives costs and constraints, and deciding in advance what would prove the decision wrong.

FOUR QUESTIONS I ASK OF EVERY FINDING

The industries changed. These questions kept showing up.

Before a finding becomes a recommendation, I use these four questions to pressure-test it.

QUESTION 1

Can I rebuild the evidence?

Raw data is not evidence until the result can be rebuilt. Definitions, populations, transformations, calculations, and assumptions should be clear enough to reproduce the finding independently.

QUESTION 2

What else could explain it?

A strong pattern can still have the wrong cause. Before accepting the obvious explanation, ask what else could produce the same result.

QUESTION 3

Does the action still make sense?

A correct finding does not justify a recommendation on its own. Cost, reversibility, capacity, customer response, implementation constraints, and second-order effects determine whether the right answer is also the right move.

QUESTION 4

What would change my mind?

Every consequential decision should name the evidence that would modify or reverse it, and when leadership will check. Agreeing on that in advance turns monitoring into governance instead of hindsight.

PEOPLE WHO SHAPED THE FIELD NOTICED THE METHOD

The Accidental Analyst earned unusually strong professional validation.

What matters to me is that the praise was for the method itself.

Stephen Few

STEPHEN FEW · AUTHOR OF SHOW ME THE NUMBERS

“A wonderful book, filled with practical advice.”

Few described it as accessible, directly applicable to business work, and a strong resource for building analytical prowess.

TRUSTED TO TEACH EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONALS

Professional associations put Stephen on faculty. Universities invited him to teach. Companies brought him onsite.

Stephen has taught experienced professionals the same discipline at the heart of The Accidental Analyst: start with the real business question, interrogate the data, test whether the context is complete, and make the analysis useful to the people who must act on it.

BUILT, SIMPLIFIED, PUBLISHED

A long record of turning complex analytical systems into clear decisions.

The same idea runs through the books and the teaching: find what matters, build the analysis around it, and make the result clear enough for someone to act on.

“Stephen looks at what the business needs and works back to the technology. This insight is invaluable for improving ROI and driving quick wins from the analytical investment.”

John Lodmell, CFO, Nordstrom Credit Services
